Once upon a time, I was a college student like any other. All I cared about was having a good time, working with numbers, and making the world a better place. As graduation neared, I did what it seemed like I was supposed to do…what was expected of me. I took interviews at investment companies and eventually went to work for a firm as a financial advisor.
I lived this life for nearly a decade. And while I loved the work, I faced some internal conflicts about the industry that grew deeper as the years went on. Yeah I got to work with numbers, but I wasn’t having a good time, and I don’t think I was doing much to make the world any better.
At first, I couldn’t figure out what the real problem was, but one day it hit me. I wasn’t able to spend time helping the audience I really wanted to reach…the regular investor.
What about the millennial who is just getting started with her career and wants to make sure she invests wisely from the beginning?
Or the thousandaire who needs to transfer his modest 401(k) but would be the low man on the totem pole for a traditional financial advisor?
How about the 45-year-old that hasn’t saved a dime but wants to make up for lost time and doesn’t know where to start?
I wasn’t helping any of these “normal” people because the fact is they didn’t meet my employer’s account minimums. They simply weren’t going to generate enough management fees.
The rich get richer. The poor get…you know how it goes.
I eventually left my profession to pursue my MBA and an entrepreneurial path. However, the idea of helping the average investor never left my mind. I hoped that somewhere along the way I’d figure out a way to address those that I always wished I could help. A way to make a real difference and have fun doing it.
